Originally an Arab trading post, the city's fortune waxed or waned depending on which bunch of crusaders was busy colonizing the island at the time. Suffice to say, Colombo came into her own in the late 19th century, with the creation of the present harbour by the British.

The attractions are few in comparison with the rest of the country, but if it's culture you're wanting, don't miss the National Museum, which has a good collection of historical works; the Art Gallery and the Gallery 706, which focus on temporary exhibits by local artists; and the city's many mosques, churches and Buddhist and Hindu temples. The hub of the nation's commerce is located in and around the old part of the city, site of a large Dutch fort and still referred to as "The Fort". There are also plenty at other monuments such as the clock tower in Fort, the former lighthouse and clusters of old colonial buildings all over the city.
