Coral Planting

Come, plant a coral, and help breathe new life into the ecosystems of the Indian Ocean that were ravaged by the 2004 South Asian tsunami. What better way to spend your holiday, than by having fun in the sun, sand and surf, and helping make our world a better place? Our Sri Lanka volunteer programs give you an opportunity to contribute your share towards saving this planet, while having a blast at the same time!

This seasonal volunteering program which runs from May to October will have you assisting in planting and nursing corals in an underwater nursery at Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa Passikudah. The program also includes an educational visit to the onsite Coral Museum. You will be provided with all the required equipment and facilities needed to carry out your volunteer work, such as diving gear. Lifeguards will be on hand to ensure the safety of the volunteers while they work in the water.

The ‘Plant a Coral’ initiative was launched in 2013. It focuses on educating people about the importance of protecting our planet’s coral reefs and marine biodiversity. This initiative also implements coral reef rehabilitation programs and aims to improve the standard of living of communities inhabiting Sri Lanka’s coasts.

The ‘Plant a Coral’ project is a collaborative effort by Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa Passikudah, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Wildlife Research and Conservation Trust (WRCT), Tokyo Cement and local volunteers from the University of Peradeniya.
