Nilgala Safari: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Set out on a thrilling jeep safari through the enchanting landscapes of Nilgala, savanna, riverine forests, and the herbal forest, each offering a unique glimpse into Sri Lanka’s diverse wilderness.
A true paradise for birdwatchers, this experience gives you the chance to spot migratory and resident species such as Jungle Bush Quail, Streak-throated Woodpecker, and the rare Painted Francolin and Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, which can only be seen in the Gal Oya National Park region through this safari. Along the way, you may also be lucky enough to encounter elephants and other mammals in their natural habitat.
For a touch of adventure, a short 2km trek takes you to Makara Kata, known as the Dragon’s Mouth, completing an unforgettable journey through these awe-inspiring ecosystems.
We recommend starting at 5:30 AM or 1:30 PM (UTC/GMT +5:30) for the best sightings.
