Ambalangoda has always been associated with Sri Lanka’s famous, colourful masks with many of these masterpieces being created in the town. Curiously, these “devil masks” have been used in exorcism rituals and ceremonies that used to be common in this region of the country. Made of the strychnine tree (Strychnos nux-vomica), these masks are now used for satarical theatre or as decorations in homes. The factory offers the opertunity to witness how these pieces of Sri Lanka folklore are handcrafted.
