Pigeon Island
Found 1km off the coast of Nilaveli, Pigeon Island marine park has the country’s most beautiful coral reefs and is filled with marine life that is accessible by snorkeling or scuba diving. One of only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka, Pigeon Island is found 1km off the coast of Nilaveli. The marine park covers 471.429 hectares and gets its name because of the pigeons that have taken over the island in the middle. Pigeon Island perhaps has the country’s most beautiful coral reefs and is filled with marine life that is accessible by snorkeling or scuba diving. The island in the middle used to be a firing range during Colonial times. In 1963, the island became a Sanctuary and then the countries 17th national park in 2003. Unfortunately, it has been damaged by the 2003 Tsunami.
