Early morning proceed to Sinharaja Rainforest for a bird watching & nature trek

The Sinharaja Rainforest will leave a nature enthusiast quite bedazzled. Birdwatchers particularly will have an astonishing range of avifauna to observe. The rare birds present include the Red-faced Malkoha, the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the Ashy-headed Babbler and the White-headed Starling, the Green-billed Coucal is considered the rarest. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the presence of mixed-species foraging bird flocks, which is a phenomenon usually only found in rainforests. 100 flocks have been systematically observed, and studies have revealed that some flocks contained 48 species including 12 endemics.

The “Ath Athuru Sevana” or the “elephant transit home” is Asia’s first Elephant rehabilittation center; founded in 1995 by Sri Lanka’s wild life conservation department. The center is spread over a terrain of 200 acres bordering the Udawalawe National Park and the Udawalawe Reservoir. Injured or orphaned elephants are brought to the center to be nursed and rehabilitated until they are fit to be released into the wild. These elephants are often victim of the human elephant conflict and the center allows you to help by fostering an elephant. Get there for the feeding time inorder to observe baby elephants and slightly older elephants from a safe distance to make sure not to disrupt their rehabilitation.

After breakfast visit Diyaluma waterfalls

Diyaluma Falls is 220 m (720 ft) high and the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is situated merely 6 km away from Koslanda in Badulla District on Colombo-Badulla highway. In Sinhalese, Diyaluma or Diya Haluma means “rapid flow of water” or may be translated as “liquid light”. According to Sri Lankan historian, Dr. R. L. Brohier, Diyaluma is the setting of the folklore about a tragedy involving a young chieftain who had been banished to the highlands and the attempt by his betrothed to join.

Visit Horton Plains early morning with a packed breakfast

Horton Plains is Sri Lanka’s highest and most isolated plateau discovered by Sir Thomas Farr in 19th hundreds. It’s named as Horton Plains in honour of the then British Governor of Sri Lanka Sir Horton. These beautiful hiking nature tracks are some of the best in the world and the only place where you can see a bear monkey (Semnopithecus vetulus monticola). The patna-grass-covered plains are also home to various endemic plant species, birds and insects that can only be seen in the region; In addition, it is possible to to spot Deer and even Leopards if you extremely lucky! The paths through the plain will take you to the precipice, popularly referred to as “Worlds End “- a sheer drop of 1050 meters and Bakers Falls!

Knuckles Massif or the Knuckles Mountain Range is part of the Hill Country of Sri Lanka, 3000 Ft or 915 Mts above sea level and covers an area of about 90 Sq.Miles or 234 Sq.Km. If you look at the mountain range from the Kandy area (Or South West of the range), you will see that the 5 peaks of the mountain range resemble knuckles of clenched fist, the range is named as such. The Sri Lankan name for this mountainous area is “Dumbara Mitiyawatha” which means “The Misty Valley”, it fits its name and is often an enchanting experience for its visitors. The mountainous are is off the beaten track and is truly upsoilt offering the perfect setting for hikers and birdlovers alike

The Dambulla temple, also known as the Golden Temple, was founded in the 1st century AD by King Valagamba who is said to have fled to the caves during an invasion from South India. This UNESCO World Heritage site is filled with various sculptures and paintings of Lord Buddha and his devotees, various Hindu divinities and gods as well as Sri Lankan Kings. Spread out over 5 caves, each cave depicts statutes and paintings from a different period of Sri Lanka’s rich history thus showcasing the evolution of Sri Lankan artistic style.

Early morning proceed to climb Pidurangala for sunrise

Pidurangala is a large rock situated a couple of kilometres away from Sigiriya. The rock was home to a monastery that dates to the 1st century BC which now remains as a temple. Starting the climb through the present-day temple one comes across various caves where monks used and still live to this day. The climb takes you through lush forest on a well-made stone made path until you reach a large statue of reclining lord Buddha. From here onwards the path stops but one can reach the summit by following a rocky trail that will require scaling a few rocks. The view from the top of the rock provides a breath-taking point of view of Sigiriya and the surrounding landscape of forest, hills and lakes.

Found in the center of the cultural triangle, Sigiriya, is another exceptional architectural, artistic and engineering landmark of ancient Sri Lanka. Carved into the rock on the orders of King Kashyapa, he used the rock to build his fortress to provide him the ultimate protection against an attack. The King build himself a palace a top the rock along with a village for his followers at the bottom of the rock decorated with watergardens containing baths and fountains that still work to this day. Often reffered to as “Lion Rock”, Sigiriya, is also famous for its frescos that depict the “Damsels of Sigiriya” which date back to 5th century AD.

Early morning wake up for a bird-watching walk

The mountain of Ritigala situated South East of Anuradhapura provide some of the most interesting ruins found in Sri Lanka. An ancient Buddhist monastery and cave complex, Ritigala’s ruins include: a complex granite footpath leading to the monastery; a hospital which includes stone beds and oil baths; and two raised platforms connected by a stone bridge, used for meditation.

Evening proceed to Minneriya National Park for a jeep Safari in search of Elephants.

Minneriya National park is one of the best places in the country to see wild elephants. Dominated by the ancient Minneriya Tank, the park has plenty of scrub, forest and wetlands in its 88.9 sq km to provide shelter for toque macaques, sambar deer, buffalo, crocodiles, leopards and abundant birdlife aswell. The dry season, from May to September, is reckoned to be the best time to Elephants, which can number 200 or more, come to feed and bathe during what is known as ‘the Gathering’. However, it’s also possible to see large numbers of elephants here at other times of year too.

The first Ancient Captial of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura, was the capital of the king’s country (Rajarata among locals) for around 1400 years. With its magnificent monuments, intricate sculptures and imposing stupas, Anuradhapura is the perfect testament to ancient Sri Lankan culture. A few of he notable sites you can visit spread across this world heritage site include:  Temple of the Sacred Fig tree (Sri Maha Bodhi), Isurumuniya, Jetawanaramaya, Abhayagiriya, Thuparama and the Twin Baths.

Enjoy a safari in the Wilpattu National Park in the morning

Wilpattu National Park, also known as the “Land of Lakes”, is a park located around the Northwest coast of Sri Lanka approximately 180 km north of Colombo. The park is 131, 693 hectares with around sixty lakes and tanks Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest and one of its oldest National Parks.
