Proceed to Polonnaruwa after breakfast

Polonnaruwa was established as Sri Lanka’s medival capital after the fall and destruction of Anuradhapura at the hands of the Cholan invaders from India. Polonnaruwa contains various masterpieces of Buddhist sculpture and architecture, as well as, remarkable feats of engineering that are widely regarded as ahead of their time. The most famous of these masterpieces is the Gal Vihara, with its famous rock carvings of Lord Buddha; The Sacred Quadrangle, which includes the Vatadage, used to hold the Tooth of Lord Buddha; and the Parakrama Samudra, or the sea of Parakrama in English, is man-made reservoir (or tank) stretching over 23 kilometers which is prime example of the advanced engineering of that time.

Enjoy an evening safari in the Minneriya National Park after visiting Polonnaruwa

Minneriya National park is one of the best places in the country to see wild elephants. Dominated by the ancient Minneriya Tank, the park has plenty of scrub, forest and wetlands in its 88.9 sq km to provide shelter for toque macaques, sambar deer, buffalo, crocodiles, leopards and abundant birdlife aswell. The dry season, from May to September, is reckoned to be the best time to Elephants, which can number 200 or more, come to feed and bathe during what is known as ‘the Gathering’. However, it’s also possible to see large numbers of elephants here at other times of year too.

Visit Sigiriya Lions Rock early morning prior to breakfast

(Approx. 5 mins’ drive from hotel to Sigiriya)

Found in the center of the cultural triangle, Sigiriya, is another exceptional architectural, artistic and engineering landmark of ancient Sri Lanka. Carved into the rock on the orders of King Kashyapa, he used the rock to build his fortress to provide him the ultimate protection against an attack. The King build himself a palace a top the rock along with a village for his followers at the bottom of the rock decorated with water gardens containing baths and fountains that still work to this day. Often referred to as “Lion Rock”, Sigiriya, is also famous for its frescos that depict the “Damsels of Sigiriya” which date back to 5th century AD.

Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic En route

Known as the Temple of the Tooth, this temple houses the famous relic of Lord Buddha’s tooth and is without a doubt the city’s most important landmark. The temple holds daily ceremonies called Puja’s (Thevava) every morning and night to honour the relic. Visitors get to see the Golden casing where the relic is kept during the ceremony where the rooms gates are opened. The ritualistic ceremony which includes traditional drums is a must for all those visiting the holy city of Kandy.

Visit Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens after breakfast

(Approx. 30 mins’ drive from hotel to Peradeniya)

The Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya was established in 1821 on what was was once the royal pleasure garden of the Kandyan Kings; now covers 140 acres smuggled on a loop of the Mahaweli River, Sri Lanka’s longest river. Its primary purpose was the testing and acclimatizing of plants for commercial use in Sri Lanka. Today the Gardens have one of the largest collections of flora from sub-tropical climates around the world. There are more than 4000 species of trees, Including flowering plants, ferns, palm trees, orchids and also tress planted by foreign dignitaries during their visit to Sri Lanka.
